What is benzoyl peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective ingredients for acne treatment. It treats inflammatory acne (so-called pimples and less black/white ones), because it kills the bacteria that causes acne. It can have side effects of irritation and peeling.

Benzoyl peroxide does not get along with many other ingredients and can neutralize them, so if you use it in an ointment or cream, be careful not to put retinoids or brightening ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, kojic acid or hydraconone in the same routine. However, there is a very famous ointment that contains benzoyl peroxide and Adeline together - Epido. Yes, it works great, Adeplin is a retinoid that goes well with benzoyl peroxide.

It is also effective when using soap, which is a gentler way to incorporate it into the routine and with less irritation.

This Differin soap contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, which is an excellent percentage for beginners. The rest of the ingredient list is short and simple. It does not contain fragrance, alcohol or essential oils. It didn't irritate my skin and it didn't dry it out at all, even though my skin is dry and it's hard for me to find soaps that don't dry me out.

Differin claims that it is also suitable for sensitive skin. If your skin is acneic and sensitive it can help but it is better to start using it gradually and not every day just to be safe.

In terms of results on me, it's hard for me to testify because I'm using Adeflin at the same time, so I can't give all the credit to the soap. What's more, I gave this soap to my little teenage brother who suffers from quite a bit of acne. After two weeks of daily use the results were really amazing! His acne was significantly reduced and he refused to use anything other than this.

Another cool thing about benzoyl peroxide is that it kills the bacteria that make the armpit smell bad when we sweat. You can clean the living room with benzoyl peroxide soap and over time you won't smell at all even if you run a marathon, because the problem is solved from the root and you don't put a plaster on it like deodorant. I tried it on myself for a few weeks and it really worked for me.

After I bought some of it, I found out that The brand conducts animal testing (I'm still not clear if it's because the company produces drugs and it has to according to the law, or they also do experiments on other products that aren't drugs). In any case, there is another company on iHerb that makes soaps with benzoyl percoside and it is cruelty-free, it's called PanOxyl. I haven't tried them yet but I understand they are also great.
