At-Home Dermaplaning for Women

*It is important to read the post to the end*

I will start by detailing the advantages, disadvantages and myths about facial shaving in women, and at the end I will tell about my personal experience.

Let's start by understanding that there are 2 types of hair on the body:

terminal - long and thick hair, and vellus - very short and thin hair, the so-called "flume".

The goal of this type of shaving is to remove this down as well, to achieve smooth and glowing skin, but it has many other benefits for the skin as well:

✅ In addition to hair, it also removes dead skin cells and does gentle exfoliation.

✅ Stimulates blood circulation and encourages the creation of new cells.

✅ The care products penetrate better and more uniformly.

✅ The makeup sits better and won't look "cakey".

I believe that at this stage many people raise an eyebrow and say - "Wait, but won't hair grow thicker, darker, and faster?!"😰.

The answer is no, it's a myth, and any dermatologist will tell you that. There is no scientific proof that shaving a hair changes its growth, neither in terminal hair nor in vellus hair.

What does happen with terminal hair is that when you cut this type of hair, its tip becomes pointed and therefore it feels thornier. It could also be that the original hair has lightened over time and the newly formed hair is its original color (but the color and thickness haven't really changed).

In vellus hair, which is much thinner and finer, this will not happen. Because of its thin structure, it will grow back to the same shape.

⚠️Disadvantages and risks⚠️

1. Risk of irritation - like any peeling (the act of removing dead cells), shaving can make the skin more sensitive for a certain period of time after the operation. It is important to shave slowly and gently, and you should take a break from active substances after shaving.

2. If you have eczema, rosacea, or very sensitive skin - facial shaving may be harmful to you. On the other hand, this is probably the gentlest way to remove hair today. I think you should consult a dermatologist in such a case.

3. If you suffer from pimples, shaving the pimple can drag bacteria all over the face and make the situation worse. It is better to try to stay away from pimples and not shave on the days of breakouts.

4. Cuts- When used incorrectly or with the wrong knife, it can cause cuts and injuries.

So how do you do it❓

1. Use a knife that is designed exactly for this, as in the picture. They are delicate and designed for home drama-planning. Knives not designed for this purpose can easily cause cuts.

2. Replace knife with each use. This knife is disposable, do not use it more than once to avoid infections and cuts. Vellus hair regrows within a month or two, so you won't run out of them that quickly.

3. On completely clean skin.

4. Some recommend doing it on dry skin, some recommend shaving cream, and some recommend oil. I'm not sure what the best answer is, and I'm not sure there is one.

5. Shave in the direction of growth, with 45 degrees. I recommend looking for a YouTube video and seeing how people do it exactly.

6. After shaving, apply a regular moisturizer without substances that can irritate such as fragrance, active substances or essential oils. It is better to avoid irritating substances that day and maybe even after.

About my personal experience:

The first time I posted that I bought the razors I got a flood of responses. Most of the comments were from women saying it was the best thing they've ever done to their skin, and it's so glowing now and the makeup sits amazing. But there were also many angry reactions - there were women who literally cursed me, said that I was irresponsible and that when I make women grow a man's hair. So I was a little scared and didn't know if I wanted to try shaving and take the risk, even though all the dermatologists say it's a myth.

In the end I decided to start on a small part of the face. I shaved a bit, waited two months, and guess what? Nothing has changed. Hair grew exactly the same.

The next thing I did sounds a little crazy, but I shaved half my face. I wanted to see if there really would be a difference. And guess what? After two months nothing has changed. So no, it won't make you grow a beard😂

Anyway, I ended up shaving my entire face and these are my conclusions:

I don't have a lot of hair naturally, and I didn't get "serious" fluff like in the videos I've seen of other women doing it.

This is probably also the reason that I hardly saw a difference and did not feel all the benefits of shaving. The shine and glow remain the same, and the make-up and skincare sit as usual. I believe that those who have more vellus hair than me will be able to see a significant change in the glow of the face and makeup.

In terms of peeling, I didn't see a significant change either. I guess regular use of peeling acids is enough for me.

Sometimes the skin was a little red and sensitive after shaving.

It's convenient and easy to do, not particularly harmful, and safer and healthier for the skin than waxing.

All in all, I'm not sure I'll continue with it regularly, but if you have relatively a lot of vellus hair in your face, I think it can be a game changer for skin shine and a great base for smoother makeup.

I would love to hear if you tried it, what you think about it, or if you want to try it

The specific knives I use (the ones in the picture) are from Kitsch. The package is of 12 knives with a cover that protects the head and it costs NIS 30 at iHerb currently.

I put it on my list of recommendations which is in my bio❤️
